‘Tradition is intrinsic to humanity. Whether it is the simple comfort of routine, or the desire to feel as though we are part of something greater than our present selves, preservation becomes one of the most fulfilling joys of life. It is not merely the transmission of customs, practices, values or even rituals which sustains tradition – but the ability for these to adapt to our current climate. Indeed, writing in itself is a tradition – with journalling and diary keeping dating back to the courtly women of 10th century of Japan. Just as key to the preservation of tradition, however, is the need to surrender previous customs if they can no longer sustain or align with contemporary belief. In our Non-Fiction section, we have strived to explore the complexity surrounding the preservation of tradition – and hope that you enjoy the thought-provoking work of our talented writers!’
